A lovely counterpoint to the pejorative spin Buddhist philosophy often puts onto day-dreaming, by one of my favorite writers Jonah Lehrer http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas/articles/2008/08/31/daydream_achiever/
I am in full agreement with the Buddhist premise that we often spend too much time in a fantasy world, that we are often unaware of where the self-generated fantasy ends and where a more directly sensed reality begins. But the lack of appreciation for the great benefits of day dreaming drives me to incredible frustration. My training in the Dharma is limited and perhaps, I hope, I just have yet to encounter teachings that present a more well-rounded view on the wandering mind.
Regardless, I think we can all agree it's critical to cultivate awareness of how self-generated concepts and more directly perceived information interact to shape your worldview and moment-to-moment thought processes.
